Dr. Margaret Horsley photographic research collection

Scope and Content Note This collection contains photographs taken by Dr. Horsley in the Philippines during her time as a Fulbright Scholar from 1951-1952. As a sociologist she photographed the people, places, and events of the Negros Oriental region of the Philippines, including festivals, churches, death rituals and funerals, traditional weaving and fishing, cockfighting, and mahjong. Horsley also documented the Moro people in Mindanao, the destruction of Typhoon Amy, and other areas outside the Philippines...

Dr. Thomas C. Kennard ledger

Scope and Content Note

This collection contains an account ledger for Dr. Thomas C. Kennard’s medical practice. It lists accounts for various individuals in Kent County including some free African Americans. Personal letter and documents were interspersed in the ledger and have been removed to a folder. These include accounts, receipts, letters including one from his son, Peregrine Wroth, Ezekiel Chambers, and Harmony School. There are also legal documents including a lease to Swan Creek Farm.

This collection contains large and medium-format black-and-white negatives of various events. Those taken for the college include commencements and awards, John F. Kennedy’s campaign visit, and photographs of Charles Downs. Other images of events and people in Chestertown and the surrounding area were taken, most likely for the Kent News.

Eben F. Perkins speeches

Scope and Content Note

This collection contains typescripts of two speeches given during commencements. The first was on August 19, 1848 when Perkins was a junior, the topic was Poland. The second speech was during his graduation on August 18, 1849, it addresses the Board, students, and faculty and talks about the pursuit of education.

Scope and Content Note

This collection contains seven photographs from the RKO production department showing models and sets for various films and a portrait photograph of Edward. There is also sheet music for “On the Good Old Eastern Shore” written by Luckey and Al Herman, a childhood friend. Both were fond of music, banjo in particular, and dances.

Fred B. Noble reminiscence

This collection contains one letter, written by Fred B. Noble to Fred W. Dumschott on July 12, 1973. This letter is in response to a letter from Dumschott asking Noble to reminisce about his years as a student at Washington College, beginning in 1898. Topics include activities of the Mount Vernon Literary Society, social life and hazing of students, athletics, faculty, and some history of the campus's development and renovations.

George R. Cather scholarship letter

Scope and Content Note

This collection contains a letter to the Orphans Court of Cecil County, Maryland recommending George R. Cather for placement as a student to Washington College. The letter is signed by seven individuals including Robert Cather. George R. appears in the 1854-1855 catalog’s list of students at Washington College. Due to two fires at the College his exact graduation date is unknown, but presumably 1858.
